Bernadine Dohrn is a Minnesota native who spent most of her life in Chicago. She graduated from the University of Chicago with a degree in economics, and moved to New York City to become part of the American left movement. After joining the Weathermen, she became an active participant in the anti-war protests at Columbia University. She was eventually arrested for disorderly conduct and served three months in prison, where she wrote her first book (The Miners' Hymn)
Her second book (Revolution for the Hell of It) was written while she was imprisoned. After her release, she became a professor at Northwestern University until 1978 when she relocated to California. She has lived in Berkeley since then and is founding member of Women Against Fundamentalism (now WAM! Women Against Military Madness).
The aspects of patriotism that hush dissent, encourage going along, and sanction comfortable distancing and compliance with what is indecent and unacceptable... those aspects are too fundamental to ignore or gloss over.Bernadine Dohrn
